In March and April our 34 volunteer listeners had significant conversations with 323 court users. Our service is entirely confidential and we take care that nothing which could identify our users is recorded – the users may be the accused, or the family and friends supporting them, or sometimes witnesses or jurors.

However, it is good sometimes to know that we have helped in sharing anxieties and concerns, as in these comments: “That was really helpful. Thank you” and “It was good to speak to you” and "Thanks for talking. It's really helped this morning. You just get anxious sitting on your own".

We maintained the rota in May successfully although it is always a more complicated month, what with court closures on public holidays and volunteers’ holiday plans. We noted 152 significant conversations.

“Signposting” is another activity of our volunteers - helping court users to find the right place to be in the busy surrounds of the court building. One of our volunteers was able to direct specific court users to a specialised court and was pleased to be complimented by a JP for assisting with the smooth running of this service.
